I’m not sure what I’m doing here.
There are many, many things I’d like to be doing here- but I’m not sure what this blog’s purpose is. I’ve thought many times of just scrapping the whole thing. Starting over. I’ve actually done that a couple of times. And now I’m pretty sure I just have no idea what I’m doing here.
Steve & I watched Julie & Julia a few nights ago, and I really, REALLY related to both of those women. The ups, the downs, the being passionate about what you’re doing. . . Steve said several times “Holy cow, that’s so you!” For instance when Julia Child happily said “Ta-Da!” when she finished chopping her onions before all the other dudes in the class, or when Julie gave her spiel about having A.D.D., and “That’s why I’m bad at housework.” Of course, when Julie’s husband was shoving chocolate cake in his mouth, I got to say “Holy cow, that’s so you!” to him, but that’s not the point. The point is, I loved watching this film, and it made me want to do something spectacular.
I also just found two books on Gardening by one of my favorite bloggers, Gayla Trail at You Grow Girl, and ordered them both. I hadn’t been watching her blog for a while, but every February I just get sick of all the snow and start thinking green, and thinking about growing things that will feed us. Amazon had just replenished my Christmas Gift Card amount after my Meggs History of Graphic Design failed to be delivered by the 3rd party seller (grr), and I just wanted to start thinking green, and now I’m reading over her blog going “OH! Paw-Paws!”
There’s something there that I just don’t have. One, I think, is time. The other, I think, is focus (“I think I have A.D.D.” ha ha). The site itself needs to be about my art & my business, but I think the blog needs to be rethought.
I’ve got my first “real” graphic designer job lined up already, which is super, super, super cool (especially that it’s local. And even more especially that it’s for another artist!) So if I can just survive this 21 credit hour mad race to the finish line that is Graduation. . . We’ll see what happens.
I’ll be thinking about what I’m doing here. I’ll get back to you.
In the meantime, here are the spiffy books & the movie that have inspired me this week:

Finally found a video podcast on Yoga worth watching:
:: YOGAmazing::502.896.9642::.
Be sure to check out “Yoga for Geeks” for stretches at your desk =)
Also “Yoga for Musicians” and “Yoga in a Gallery” Yoga in a Minute episodes.
I’m now watching “Yoga for better Memory.” He’s entertaining, charismatic, knowledgeable, and you wouldn’t know he’s from Louisville, Kentucky until he says “Fire” or “Prior” (Fahr or Prahr). Fun.
If you’ve been interested in it but never really gotten into it before, it looks like this would be the one to help. I’ll try and stick with it this time!

The unspoken rules of graphic design. | Adland.
Dustin shared this with me, it’s funny ’cause it’s true.
I added it to my links. It’s a shame, because all my best content is in the links section. Wish there was a way to automatically add links to posts, or at least include additions in the RSS feed.
Oh well.

This article was talking to me today. Rio’s Financial Aid/Accounting/Human Resources departments have been taking a toll on me the past few weeks. I’m almost convinced they want me to starve (not so much Accounting, they seem to be pulling for me). Not to mention feeling busy to the point of exhaustion, and Reni’s new schedule tearing me up. The thought has definitely crossed my mind that it might be easier to just give up & get whatever work I can get.
But Benjy & some other art faculty and friends have been encouraging me. So have newfound FOF friends. And of course I wouldn’t be anywhere near this point without Steve. God keeps telling me I’m on the right track, just keep dealing with these obstacles. I’m almost done. Just need to keep my eyes on the prize and hope for a better future.
Anyway, here’s the article:

Steve wanted a “Pollock” for his birthday on Friday. In fact he’s wanted one since I told him about seeing this film
in Movies About Art class last year. So, Reni & I obliged =)
Then we had to scrub off the oil paint!
Having an artistic Ohana is definitely a blessing in my life. Reni was excited all week about surprising him with this, and in the process she got a lesson in art history from my describing to her what kind of art Jackson Pollock did. It was a fun project! And if you’re not afraid of getting messy I encourage you to try it next time you have kids with nothing to do.

Sometimes I hate this area. I mean absolutely despise it. Particularly when job hunting. I look on sites like The Creative Group, and even on Indeed, which lists practically everything- and can’t find a single thing for a Graphic Designer in a 50 mile radius of Gallia. Seriously. That’s what I have my email alerts on Jobster set to. You know what Jobster’s been sending me? Movie Extra ads for West Virginia.
Then I follow this dirty Jeep-looking-thing, probably owned by a teenager, out of my old Alma Mater on my way home from ma-n-pa’s Read the rest of this entry »

So, as promised, here’s a post, only three days after the last one! I’ll get better at this as time goes by. Back in my LJ days when I knew I had friends reading it was easy to just spew out whatever came to mind. Time to get focused though.
The last few weeks since New Years I’ve been finding interesting site after interesting site, sort of like when I was finding CSS-Tricks and GoMedia and all of those designing how-to’s a while back. Now it’s been a journey down a path of simplicity, do-it-yourselfing, and money management. It’s hard to find just the right blogs without getting lost in the forrest, so here’s what I’ve found before pulling myself back:
Zen-Habits: It all started with ZenHabits.com. I’m not sure at all how I came across this one at first. Just a stumble into the garden, I think. About living simply, the power of doing less; a dream I hope to realize someday soon.
This led to Get Rich Slowly and The Simple Dollar. They pretty much speak for themselves. I’ve been learning quite a bit about this.
Which led to You Grow Girl, a blog for your average every day gardner. Very pretty, and practical. Lovely fruits and veggies!
Threadbanger is a pretty awesome, accidental find that sort of goes along with the rest of these. It’s a DIY site for us freaky starving artist types. Pretty spiffy.
Now, as I have to go to my icky Statistics class, it’s time to pack up and leave the lab. Be watching for a links page with these and others of my favorite sites. I also have another idea hidden in my brain somewhere that I’ll try and squeeze some time into. And tomorrow I’ll probably be posting about the upcoming Ariel show Wait Until Dark. That’s the plan anyway.
Have a nice night, internet land.

Finally got the top nav looking the way I like it. Â
Messing with Conditional Tags in the sidebar, which is definitely something I’ll be utilizing in the ArtStudio139 site. Â The blog has a bloggy side, and certain pages simply have links to sub-pages. Â The home page has nothing but a search box so far, and won’t until sometime tomorrow. Â Time for me to snooze.Â
Oh, and I’ve started using FeedBurner for my RSS. Â So if you’re subscribing to the old address, by some slim chance, there’s a link to the new style up in the new header. Â It says 16 readers, yeah that’s obviously a placeholder. Â Right now my real stats read “1.” ha.
My next step is going to be getting the Folio cleaned up & spuffed up. Â After that the shop. Â I’m going to upload a couple of starter designs to Zazzle, a couple that some Church friends will enjoy, especially. Â And maybe link to some good books on Amazon. Â Do a Movies about Art shop page, as well. Â That may be a Friday task, because I’m also going to start on ArtStudio’s template tomorrow.
Other plans include actually writing real articles now and then as a way to help me learn things. . . instead of just these goofy site updates. Â
There’s also a a show coming up, which I will not be on stage for, but will probably be backstage when the time comes. Â It’s another Michelle Miller production, but Steve and I were in Florida when auditions came around. Â Somehow her favorite male actor got a part anyway though. Â I guess there were only two girl parts that got filled in pretty quickly. Â Oh well- I have too much on my plate right now, anyway. Â Spring or Summer I’ll get back in something.
Enough rambling. Â Time for sleep.
End.
